Animal Kingdom is one of the most content-heavy chapters in NEET Biology, requiring notes that distil characteristics of eleven phyla into memorable formats. The classification hierarchy uses key distinguishing features: level of organisation (cellular in Porifera, tissue in Cnidaria, organ in Platyhelminthes, organ-system in higher phyla), body symmetry (radial in Cnidaria, bilateral in most others), coelom type (acoelomate Platyhelminthes, pseudocoelomate Nematoda, coelomate from Annelida onwards), and development pattern (protostome in most invertebrates, deuterostome in Echinodermata and Chordata). Each phylum entry should list the key characteristic, body cavity type, symmetry, respiratory organ, excretory structure, and 2-3 important examples. For NEET, the most frequently tested phyla are Arthropoda (largest phylum, chitin exoskeleton, jointed legs), Chordata (notochord, dorsal nerve cord, pharyngeal gill slits), and Cnidaria (cnidoblasts, diploblastic, tissue-level organisation).
The five vertebrate classes from Pisces through Mammalia require comparison-based notes because NEET frequently tests differences between adjacent classes. Chondrichthyes (cartilaginous fish) have a cartilaginous endoskeleton, placoid scales, and lack an air bladder, while Osteichthyes (bony fish) have a bony endoskeleton, cycloid or ctenoid scales, and an air bladder for buoyancy. Amphibians are the first tetrapods with a three-chambered heart and dual respiration through lungs and moist skin. Reptiles have dry scaly skin, a three-chambered heart with an incomplete ventricular septum (except Crocodilus with four chambers), and lay shelled eggs. Birds (Aves) have hollow bones for flight, a four-chambered heart with complete separation of oxygenated and deoxygenated blood, and feathers. Mammals are identified by hair, mammary glands, a muscular diaphragm, and seven cervical vertebrae. Notes organised as comparison tables across these features enable rapid recall during the exam.
