Biodiversity exists at three hierarchical levels that NEET tests with specific examples and quantitative data. Genetic diversity refers to the variety of genes within a species, exemplified by the thousands of rice varieties in India each with distinct genetic makeup. Species diversity measures the number of different species in a given area, and India with approximately 45,000 plant species and 91,000 animal species is one of the 12 mega-diversity nations. Ecosystem diversity encompasses the variety of habitats within a region, from tropical rainforests to coral reefs to desert ecosystems. The species-area relationship described by Alexander von Humboldt follows the equation log S equals log C plus Z times log A, where Z typically ranges from 0.1 to 0.2 for smaller areas within a continent. The Rivet Popper hypothesis by Paul Ehrlich compares species loss to removing rivets from an airplane wing, illustrating how each species contributes to ecosystem stability.
Conservation strategies are divided into in-situ (within natural habitat) and ex-situ (outside natural habitat) approaches. In-situ conservation includes National Parks (106 in India), Wildlife Sanctuaries (551 in India), and Biosphere Reserves (18 in India). Ex-situ conservation includes zoological parks, botanical gardens, seed banks, and cryopreservation facilities. India has four biodiversity hotspots: the Western Ghats, the Eastern Himalayas, the Indo-Burma region, and Sundaland. Each hotspot must meet two criteria: contain at least 1,500 endemic plant species and have lost at least 70 percent of its original habitat. NEET questions frequently test specific examples of endemic species in Indian hotspots, the HIPPO framework for biodiversity threats (Habitat loss, Invasive species, Pollution, Population growth, Over-exploitation), and IUCN Red List categories from Least Concern to Extinct.
| Strategy | Type | Number in India | Key Feature |
|---|---|---|---|
| National Parks | In-situ | 106 | Strictest protection, no human activity |
| Wildlife Sanctuaries | In-situ | 551 | Some human activities permitted |
| Biosphere Reserves | In-situ | 18 | Multiple zones including human settlement |
| Zoological Parks | Ex-situ | 60+ | Captive breeding programs |
| Seed Banks | Ex-situ | Multiple | Preservation of plant genetic material |
