The Evolution chapter begins with the origin of life, covering theories from abiogenesis to the Oparin-Haldane hypothesis of chemical evolution. NEET tests the understanding that life originated from non-living matter through a gradual chemical process: simple inorganic molecules formed organic compounds in the reducing atmosphere of early Earth, which assembled into protocells capable of self-replication. Miller and Urey's 1953 experiment, which simulated early Earth conditions and produced amino acids from methane, ammonia, hydrogen, and water vapour, is a frequently tested experiment. Students must know the specific conditions used (electric discharge simulating lightning) and the products obtained (amino acids, sugars, and nitrogenous bases). The distinction between biogenesis (life from life) and abiogenesis (spontaneous generation) is another common question topic, with Pasteur's swan-neck flask experiment serving as the definitive disproof of spontaneous generation.
Darwin's theory of evolution by natural selection remains the central concept in this chapter. NEET questions test the understanding of natural selection types: stabilising selection (reduces variation, favours intermediate forms), directional selection (shifts the mean towards one extreme), and disruptive selection (favours both extremes). Industrial melanism in peppered moths (Biston betularia) is the classic example of directional selection. The Hardy-Weinberg principle provides the mathematical foundation for population genetics: in the absence of evolutionary forces, allele frequencies remain constant across generations. The equation p-squared plus 2pq plus q-squared equals 1 allows calculation of genotype frequencies from allele frequencies. NEET numerical problems typically provide one frequency and ask students to calculate others. Five factors can disturb Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium: gene flow, genetic drift, mutation, natural selection, and non-random mating, each representing a mechanism of evolution.
Direct questions about experimental conditions and results appear frequently in NEET.
Being comfortable calculating p, q, and genotype frequencies saves time in the exam.
Brain volume, posture, and tool use for each ancestor species are commonly tested.

Evolution typically contributes 4-5 questions to NEET. While not as high as genetics, its a conceptual chapter where understanding guarantees marks. No numerical complexity - pure concept questions.
