Henry M. Gunn High School — Palo Alto, California
School type: Public Magnet · Live coaching in PT (Pacific)
Henry M. Gunn High School (commonly Gunn) is one of two public high schools in Palo Alto Unified School District. It serves a community heavily connected to Stanford University and the Silicon Valley tech industry, and has a long tradition of academic and athletic distinction. Gunn is consistently ranked among the top public high schools in California by US News and Niche.
Gunn AP Biology is taught by a strong science faculty with significant lab and research-prep emphasis. The school's biology programme integrates with the broader Palo Alto STEM culture — many students participate in the Stanford Medical Youth Science Program (SMYSP), Stanford Compression Forum, or research stints in labs at Stanford School of Medicine, the Stanford Cancer Institute, or affiliated biotech companies along the Hwy-101 corridor. The school has documented USABO Open and Semifinal participation and a robust pre-med matriculation pattern.
Gunn students typically take AP Biology in 11th or 12th grade and can pair it with the school's offerings in AP Chemistry, AP Physics, and biology-adjacent electives. The PAUSD calendar runs August-to-June with significant winter and spring breaks; AP Bio review sessions in March and April are dense, with most teachers running full-length practice FRQs in the weeks leading to the exam. Students preparing for both AP-5 and USABO Semifinal typically begin the integrated track in summer of 10th grade.
For Gunn students, our 1:1 coaching layers FRQ rubric mastery onto the school's strong content base. For students also pursuing Stanford-affiliated research, we coordinate session schedules around lab hours. PT evenings or weekend mornings are most common; sessions are recorded so students can review during commute or lab time.
Sourced from publicly available rankings (US News, Niche, Boarding School Review), CEE / USABO TRC press releases, and the school's own publications.
Gunn has documented USABO Open and Semifinal participation across recent years (publicly reported via USABO TRC bios).
