National Standard Examination in Biology · India
NSEB is the first round of the Indian pathway to the International Biology Olympiad, conducted by the Indian Association of Physics Teachers. It is written on the NCERT foundation, which is why Indian students often mistake it for a harder NEET paper. It is not. It rewards depth and reasoning on the same material, under a question format that punishes recall without understanding.

Buying all of these at once is the most common and most expensive mistake in olympiad preparation. Start at the top.
NCERT
The base NSEB is written on top of. Do not start with Campbell if NCERT is not already secure — the olympiad tests depth on this foundation, not a different foundation.
Urry, Cain, Wasserman, Minorsky, Orr
The one universal text. Every national olympiad on this list is written against material Campbell covers, and Singapore’s own olympiad body tells shortlisted students to read it. Get the latest edition and work it chapter by chapter rather than dipping.
Klug, Cummings, Spencer, Palladino
Genetics carries roughly a fifth of the theory paper and is where problem-solving marks are won or lost. Klug drills the problem types; Campbell explains the concepts. You need both.
Hill, Wyse, Anderson
Animal anatomy and physiology is the single heaviest section on the theory paper. Hill gives you the comparative, mechanism-level treatment the questions assume.
Raven, Evert, Eichhorn
Plant anatomy and physiology is the section most students quietly skip and then lose marks on. School syllabi treat plants thinly everywhere; the olympiad does not.
Begon, Townsend, Harper
Ecology is a smaller share of the paper, so read selectively. Population dynamics and community interactions are the parts that actually get examined.
John Alcock
Ethology is a small slice of the paper and the one section where a couple of focused weeks moves your score more than another month on cell biology.

Secure NCERT first. If Class 11 and 12 biology are not solid, Campbell will feel like a second syllabus rather than a deeper one.
Then read Campbell end to end, two or three chapters a week, from the start of Class 11 if you can. A year of steady reading beats three months of panic.
Add the depth texts selectively, and only where past papers show you losing marks. Nobody reads Alberts cover to cover and nobody should.
Start timed past papers at least eight weeks before 22 November. The format — 60 questions in 120 minutes with negative marking — is a skill of its own.
Keep an error log and separate concept gaps from careless losses. The fix for each is completely different, and treating them the same is why scores plateau.
