The honest answer parents rarely get
There is no official biology olympiad for these years. Not NSEB, not NSEJS, not anything on the HBCSE track. The exams marketed to Class 6–8 are private paid quizzes. What these three years are genuinely for is the part nobody sells you: reading depth and reasoning, built early enough to matter.

None of this makes the private exams harmful — sitting one is decent practice at working under time pressure. The harm is only in paying for them under the belief that they are a step toward the International Biology Olympiad. They are not.
The students who go furthest on the olympiad track are rarely the ones who sat the most exams early. They are the ones who arrived at Class 11 already able to read a passage of unfamiliar biology and reason about it. That is a three-year habit, not a syllabus.
Tens of thousands sit NSEB. About 300 reach INBO. About 35 attend OCSC. Four represent India at the International Biology Olympiad. A Class 6–8 student is three to five years out from the first of those — which is exactly the head start that decides it.

The Class 9–10 pathwayConcept-first biology for Class 6, 7 and 8 across all boards, taught by AIIMS-trained faculty in small batches, with olympiad-style reasoning built into the teaching rather than bolted on. ₹90,000 for the academic year, the same fee for every class from 6 to 10. No. The official pathway to the International Biology Olympiad runs NSEB → INBO → OCSC → IBO, and it starts at NSEB, which is set at Class 11–12 depth. Even NSEJS, the junior science olympiad, is aimed at Class 9–10. There is no government or HBCSE-recognised biology olympiad for Class 6–8. Any exam sold to these years is a private product.
Almost certainly a private paid quiz from SOF, CREST, School Connect or a similar company. They are not fraudulent and the practice does no harm, but they are not connected to the IBO pathway, they are not run by IAPT or HBCSE, and the medals carry no weight in admissions or in olympiad selection. Do not pay for one believing it is a step toward IBO.
The opposite — but the work is reading and reasoning, not exam entries. Students who dominate NSEB in Class 11 are almost always the ones who spent Class 6–8 reading well beyond their textbook and learning to reason about unfamiliar biology. That habit cannot be built in the six weeks before an exam. It is exactly what these three years are for.
Concept-first biology across all boards (CBSE, ICSE, IB, state), taught for understanding rather than marks, with olympiad-style reasoning problems and reading habits that build toward NSEJS in Class 9–10 and NSEB in Class 11. Small batches, AIIMS-trained faculty, and no exam pressure at this age.
NSEB, the first official stage, is realistically attempted from Class 11. For the 2026 season the enrolment window is 21 August – 14 September 2026 and the exam is on 22 November 2026, with a fee of ₹300. A Class 6–8 student is preparing for that paper three to five years early — which is precisely why the students who start now tend to win it.
