A realistic, week-by-week plan for working through Brain Facts, what to add beyond it, and how to practise the specimen-ID, patient-diagnosis, and live Q&A rounds that separate a written-round finisher from a national finalist.
Remember these points for your Olympiad preparation
The good news about Brain Bee preparation is that the syllabus is genuinely bounded — unlike NSEB or USABO, where "the syllabus" effectively means "biology," the Brain Bee's written content lives almost entirely inside one free book. The bad news is that a bounded syllabus is not the same as an easy one. Brain Facts is dense, and the competition's higher rounds test things a book alone cannot teach you.
This is a realistic plan: how to actually work through Brain Facts, what to add on top of it, how to practise the non-written rounds, and a week-by-week arc you can adapt to your own competition date.
Brain Facts — A Primer on the Brain and Nervous System — is published by the Society for Neuroscience and is free to download as a PDF from brainfacts.org. Make sure you are studying from the current edition your competition's syllabus references — check the announcement or study guidance from your regional chapter, since a national organizer will usually confirm which edition and any supplementary material applies for that cycle.
Reading Brain Facts once, cover to cover, feels productive but does not build exam-ready recall. Use three passes with different goals.

The jump from Pass 1 to Pass 3 is where most of the real learning happens. Students who stop at Pass 1 — "I read the book" — consistently underperform students who did fewer total hours but pushed through all three passes.
Brain Facts covers the content, but the Brain Bee's higher rounds test skills that a straight read-through does not build.

Do not save these for the last week. Specimen ID and live Q&A are performance skills, and performance skills need repeated, spaced practice — not a single cram session.
This plan assumes roughly 10-12 weeks before your competition date, which is a reasonable runway for a first-time competitor balancing normal schoolwork. Adjust the number of weeks to however much runway you actually have before your confirmed date — do not assume this calendar's length matches your specific regional chapter's timeline without checking it.

If you are also preparing for NSEB or INBO in the same window, treat this as a parallel track with its own dedicated hours rather than trying to merge the two — the content genuinely does not overlap enough to combine study sessions. USABO is open to students in grades 9-12. Middle schoolers should look at Science Olympiad Division B, which is built for grades 6-9.
Most students work through Campbell over 6-9 months. The Semifinal leans on data interpretation and experimental design, so drill those alongside content.
Registration goes through a school or an approved centre. If your school does not participate, a teacher can register as a new centre with CEE.
