How to Choose a USABO Coach or Program: 7 Questions to Ask

You have decided you want USABO coaching. Good — but "USABO coaching" is not a regulated label, and the quality range is enormous, from serious olympiad programs to general test-prep tutors who added "USABO" to their menu. Before you pay anyone, ask these seven questions. The answers tell you almost everything.

1. Who actually teaches — and how deep is their biology?

USABO is university-level biology. A tutor who is strong at SAT or general science is not automatically a USABO coach. Ask directly: what is the instructor's biology background, and have they taught olympiad-level material specifically? You want faculty whose subject depth clearly exceeds the Open and Semifinal, not someone one chapter ahead of the student.

2. Live faculty-led classes, or a video library?

There is a big difference between learning from a teacher in real time and watching pre-recorded videos. Recorded content is fine as a supplement, but it cannot answer your question, cannot see where you are stuck, and cannot adapt. Ask: are classes live, and is it the same instructor throughout the year? A fixed instructor who knows your weaknesses is worth far more than a rotating cast or a passive playlist.

3. Do they give written feedback on every past-paper attempt?

This is the single highest-signal question. Improvement on USABO comes from the error-review loop — attempting past papers, then having a knowledgeable teacher analyze every wrong answer and show you the pattern you keep missing. Many programs assign past papers; few actually read and mark your attempts. Ask: when I do a past paper, does a teacher review my specific errors and tell me what to fix? If the answer is vague, keep looking.

4. What is the batch size?

Olympiad coaching is not a lecture hall. In a batch of 40, no one is reviewing your individual work. Ask for the actual maximum batch size, and whether 1:1 is available. Small batches (single digits to low double digits) or 1:1 are where the feedback loop in question 3 is even possible.

5. Does the schedule fit your time zone and your AP load?

If you are in the US and the coach is abroad, ask whether classes run in US-friendly evening time zones (ET / CT / MT / PT) — not the middle of your school night. And ask whether the program is built to run in parallel with AP Biology, since the smartest students prepare for both at once (February USABO precedes the May AP exam, and the prep overlaps heavily).

6. Do they prepare you for the Semifinal — including the practical side?

Many programs stop at the Open Exam. But the Open is just the entry point; the Semifinal is a different, harder exam (longer, with select-all and short-response formats and primary-research-style data interpretation), and the National Finals include a lab/practical component. Ask: does the program cover Semifinal strategy and, for serious contenders, practical/lab skills — or only Open-level content?

7. What do they actually claim — and can they back it?

Ask about track record, but listen for how they answer. Honest programs describe their approach and are specific and measured about outcomes. Be wary of vague grandeur and run from anyone promising "guaranteed selection," a guaranteed Semifinal slot, or a fabricated statistic ("X% of our students get into MIT"). USABO is genuinely competitive; no one can guarantee a result, and in many jurisdictions advertising a guaranteed competitive outcome is not even permitted. A coach willing to be honest about what they can and cannot promise is the one you want.

A quick red-flag checklist

Walk away if a program:

• Cannot name the instructor's specific biology credentials.
• Is only pre-recorded video with no live teaching.
• Does not review your individual past-paper errors.
• Hides its batch size or runs huge classes.
• Only teaches to the Open Exam.
• Promises "guaranteed selection" or cites an unsourced admit-rate statistic.

The bottom line

The seven questions come down to one idea: a real USABO program is deep, live, small, and honest. It is taught by genuine biology specialists, in real time, in small groups, with a working error-review loop, all the way through the Semifinal — and it tells you the truth about what it can deliver.
