USABO for International & Non-US-Citizen Students

This is one of the most confused questions in olympiad preparation, and the two most common answers online are both wrong. "International students can't do USABO at all" is wrong. "Anyone anywhere can enter USABO" is also wrong. The real answer is precise and worth getting right, because getting it wrong can cost a capable student an opportunity.

The short version

• The USABO Open Exam is open to any student enrolled at a registered US high school — regardless of citizenship or visa. An international student, an F1-visa student, a green-card holder, a US citizen: all can sit the Open Exam if their US school is registered.
• The citizenship line is drawn after the Open Exam. To advance to the Semifinal, and therefore to the National Finals and Team USA / IBO, a student must be a US citizen or a legal permanent resident (green-card holder), and be able to prove it.

So: an international student at a US high school can take the Open, can do genuinely well on it, and can put that result on a college application — but cannot make Team USA.

What this means for you, case by case

You are an international / F1-visa student at a US high school. You can take the Open Exam. Prepare for it exactly like any other student — Campbell Biology, past papers, the areas AP underweights (plant and animal physiology, ethology, biosystematics). If you do well, a strong Open result (Honorable Mention, or a Semifinal-level score) is a real, verifiable biology credential for your applications. You will not be able to advance to the Semifinal round or Team USA, but that does not erase the value of a strong Open performance.

You are a non-citizen but a green-card holder at a US school. You have the same pathway as a US citizen — you can take the Open and advance all the way to National Finals and Team USA, provided you can show your permanent-resident status. Prepare for the full pathway.

You are studying outside the US (not at a US school). USABO is not your route — it is tied to US-school registration. But you have an excellent alternative: your own national Biology Olympiad, which feeds into the same International Biology Olympiad (IBO). Depending on your country that is BBO (United Kingdom), INBO / IOQB (India), SBO (Singapore), CBO (Canada), and so on. These carry strong signals in their own right, and the biology you master is the same.

Does an Open Exam result actually help my college application?

Yes — with a caveat about honesty. A strong USABO Open result is a verifiable, nationally administered biology credential, and that is genuinely useful on an application, especially for a student applying to selective US STEM or BS/MD programmes. What it is not is a guarantee of anything, and you should be wary of any coaching that implies a specific admissions outcome or cites an unsourced statistic. Present it for what it honestly is: evidence of real biology ability, benchmarked against a large national field.
