Ecology is widely considered the most scoring unit in NEET Biology because questions are predominantly direct from NCERT with minimal calculation or interpretation required. The four ecology chapters, Organisms and Populations, Ecosystem, Biodiversity and Conservation, and Environmental Issues, together contribute 12-15 marks. Organisms and Populations covers population attributes (birth rate, death rate, sex ratio, age distribution), population growth models (exponential J-curve with unlimited resources versus logistic S-curve with carrying capacity K), and species interactions (mutualism, competition, predation, parasitism, commensalism, and amensalism). Each interaction type has specific NCERT examples that are tested directly: mycorrhiza for mutualism, Cuscuta for parasitism, and barnacles on whales for commensalism. Mastering these examples with their interaction categories is one of the most efficient uses of study time in NEET preparation.
The Ecosystem chapter tests understanding of energy flow (unidirectional, following the 10 percent rule through trophic levels), ecological pyramids (of number, biomass, and energy), productivity concepts (GPP, NPP, and secondary productivity), and nutrient cycling (carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus cycles with specific bacterial roles). Ecological succession from pioneer community to climax community, including the distinction between primary succession (on bare rock starting with lichen) and secondary succession (on disturbed land), is another frequently tested topic. Environmental Issues covers pollution types, their causes and effects, greenhouse gases and global warming, ozone depletion by chlorofluorocarbons, and waste management including biodegradable and non-biodegradable waste categories. These topics increasingly appear as application-based questions connecting scientific concepts to current environmental challenges.
