What 4 Weeks of HL Crash Course Actually Covers

No vague "complete revision" promises. Below is the literal schedule we run, honed across multiple May exam sessions of HL candidates.

Week 1

AHL Topic Revision — High-Yield Additional HL Content

AHL questions appear primarily in Section B of Paper 2 and in roughly 25% of Paper 1A. We hit the highest-return AHL themes first.

Theme B2.3 — transport: water and mineral uptake, transpiration, mass flow hypothesis, blood flow regulation

Week 2

Paper 1 — Multiple Choice + Data Response Mastery

Paper 1A (40 MCQ, 60 min) and Paper 1B (data response, 60 min) sit back to back. Speed and pattern recognition decide the band.

HL Paper 2 is where 7-grade candidates separate themselves. Section A is data-driven; Section B is extended response of 9–15 marks per question.

HL Crash Course — Frequently Asked Questions

When should I start the IB Biology HL crash course?▾

The 4-week intensive is built for the final stretch — typically starting in the first week of April for May-session HL candidates, or the first week of October for November-session candidates. Starting earlier than 6 weeks out blunts the urgency; starting later than 3 weeks leaves no time for two full Paper 2 mocks under timed conditions.

How is the HL crash course different from the SL version?▾

HL candidates sit additional higher-level (AHL) content that SL students do not — themes such as A1.2 nucleic acid structure depth, B2.3 transport, C1.2 enzymes and metabolism extensions, C4.2 ecosystem stability, and D3.3 homeostasis extensions. HL Paper 1 has 40 questions in 1 hour (vs SL 30 in 45 min) and HL Paper 2 includes a section with extended-response questions worth 9–15 marks each. The HL course allocates Week 1 entirely to AHL drill and gives twice the Paper 2 essay practice.

Is the crash course delivered live or recorded?▾

All teaching sessions are delivered live online — typically 12 hours per week of small-group instruction (3–6 students per batch) plus 1:1 add-on slots. Sessions are recorded so students can revisit any topic, but the live format is non-negotiable for the timed mocks because we mark them under exam conditions and debrief in real time.

How many past papers does the HL course cover?▾

Eight full past papers under exam conditions: four Paper 1 sittings (1A multiple choice + 1B data-based) and four Paper 2 sittings, all with examiner-style annotated marking. Additional topic-specific past-paper questions are sequenced into daily revision, bringing the total to 200+ past-paper questions across the four weeks.

Can I join the HL crash course if my school has not finished the syllabus?▾

Yes, but with a caveat. We run a 90-minute diagnostic in the first week to identify any AHL topics your school skipped or rushed (Topic D3.3 homeostasis and C4.2 ecosystem stability are the most commonly under-taught). Missing content is filled in via targeted 1:1 sessions added to the standard schedule. If more than three AHL themes are entirely uncovered, we recommend the 6-week extended option instead.

What if my exam is less than 3 weeks away?▾

A compressed 2- or 3-week sprint is available for late starters. The trade-off: less time to consolidate AHL content, so the sprint prioritises Paper 1 multiple choice (highest mark-per-minute return) and Paper 2 command-term drill. Honest expectation-setting: a 2-week sprint can move a predicted 5 to a 6, but moving a 5 to a 7 is unrealistic in that window without prior strong foundations.
