American International School of Johannesburg — Johannesburg, South Africa
School type: IB Diploma Programme · IB Programmes: PYP, DP · Live coaching in SAST (South Africa)
The American International School of Johannesburg (AISJ) is an American international school founded in 1982, with its main campus in Bryanston near Sandton and a second campus in Pretoria. Accredited by the Middle States Association, it serves an international community drawn from around 80 nationalities, with English as the language of instruction.
AISJ was authorised for the IB in February 1994 — making it South Africa’s first IB World School. It offers the IB Diploma Programme in Grades 11–12 alongside a US high-school diploma, so students can graduate with both, and it is adding the IB Primary Years Programme as it moves toward becoming a full IB continuum school.
In the May 2025 session AISJ’s IB Diploma candidates averaged 33 points, above the world average of around 30, and roughly 96% of graduates continue to three- and four-year higher-education institutions — nearly half to the US and Canada, with the remainder largely to the UK and beyond.
For AISJ families, specialist IB Biology coaching most often supports the Paper 1 / Paper 2 mark scheme and the Internal Assessment — translating strong American-style classroom work into the IB’s specific rubric. Our 1:1 sessions run in SAST around the school day.
Sourced from publicly available rankings, the school's own annual diploma results communications, and the IB Organization's programme authorisations.
AISJ’s May 2025 IB Diploma cohort averaged 33 points, above the global average of around 30. The school offers the IB Diploma in Grades 11–12 alongside a US high-school diploma.
About 96% of AISJ graduates continue to higher education, with nearly half going to universities in the US and Canada and the remainder mostly to the UK and other destinations. The IB Diploma broadens access to UK and European universities for the school’s international community.
AISJ runs the IB Diploma in Grades 11–12 toward the Northern-Hemisphere May exam session. We schedule live 1:1 sessions in SAST around the school day, align IA mentorship to the school’s internal deadlines, and drill the IB Biology Paper 1 / Paper 2 mark schemes with past-paper data-response practice.
