International School of Beijing (ISB) is one of the longest-established international schools in mainland China, founded in 1980 to serve the Beijing diplomatic and expat community. ISB's main campus sits in Shunyi district, north-east Beijing, in close proximity to other major expat-only international schools (WAB, Dulwich Beijing, Yew Chung). The school serves ~1,800 students from over 50 nationalities and offers the IB Diploma Programme alongside US Advanced Placement (AP) in the senior school — making ISB one of the few schools in Beijing offering both pathways under one roof.
ISB Biology is taught across both IB DP and AP streams in parallel, with separate Biology HL/SL classes for IB Diploma students and AP Biology classes for AP-track students. Class sizes typically run 16–20 students in DP and 15–22 in AP. The Biology department is staffed by certified IB DP teachers (several with IB examiner experience) plus US-credentialed AP-experienced teachers. For ISB Biology HL students, the gap driving external tutoring is Paper 2 long-response mark-scheme calibration and IA scaffolding — gaps any class of 16–20 students cannot fully close with weekly teacher time alone. Our 1:1 sessions add rubric calibration, structured IA mentorship from topic selection through evaluation, and timed Paper 1 + Paper 2 mocks in the run-up to May finals. For ISB AP Biology students, we add weekly FRQ rubric calibration calibrated to the College Board AP Biology rubric.
ISB's WSQ (Wellness + Service + Quest) programme integrates service learning and outdoor education through the senior school. ISB IB Biology follows the standard two-year DP track with IA topic selection in late DP1 and submission early DP2; EE submission in DP2 for Biology EE candidates. AP Biology runs as a one-year course culminating in the May AP exam.
