Rangitoto College is a state co-educational secondary school in Mairangi Bay on Auckland’s North Shore, opened in 1956. With a roll of more than 4,000 students it is widely described as New Zealand’s largest traditional secondary school, which gives its senior students an unusually broad range of subject and pathway choices.

An authorised IB World School since 2015, Rangitoto runs a genuine dual pathway: students can take New Zealand’s NCEA or choose the IB Diploma Programme as a two-year course across Years 12 and 13. The Diploma includes the full IB core — Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay and CAS — and entry to the IB stream requires strong Merit/Excellence-level results at Year 11.

IB Biology is offered at both Standard and Higher Level within the school’s Group 4 sciences (alongside Chemistry, Physics and Environmental Systems & Societies). In 2025 the IB cohort averaged 36 points against a global average of 30.5, with two students scoring 44/45 and 26% earning the bilingual diploma.

Because Rangitoto is one of only around a dozen New Zealand schools authorised for the IB Diploma, its IB students often want specialist Biology support that their NCEA-focused peers don’t need.
