Shanghai American School — Shanghai, China
School type: International (IB World School) · IB Programmes: DP · Live coaching in CST (China)
Shanghai American School (SAS) operates twin campuses in Pudong and Puxi, founded in 1912 as one of the oldest American international schools in Asia. SAS runs a dual-curriculum senior school: the IB Diploma Programme alongside Advanced Placement (AP) — making it one of the few schools in mainland China where students can pursue either pathway under the same roof. The school is publicly reported as the first AP Capstone Diploma school in Asia, an unusually rigorous AP credentialing track.
SAS Biology is taught across both DP and AP streams in parallel, with separate Biology HL/SL classes for IB Diploma students and AP Biology classes for AP-track students. Class sizes typically run 18–24 students, and the Biology department is staffed by certified IB teachers (some with examiner experience) plus AP-experienced US-credentialed teachers. Laboratory facilities support every prescribed IB practical investigation in the 2025 syllabus and the full AP Biology investigations list.
For SAS Biology HL students, the gap that drives external tutoring is not curriculum exposure — SAS teaches the IB syllabus thoroughly — but Paper 2 long-response mark-scheme calibration and IA scaffolding through the May–November DP1 internal-assessment cycle. SAS class teachers manage 18–24 students per section and cannot mark every Paper 2 long-response attempt to IB rubric weekly. Our 1:1 sessions plug into exactly that gap: rubric calibration, IA mentorship from topic selection through final evaluation, and Paper 1 + Paper 2 timed mocks in the run-up to May finals.
SAS students typically carry 4–6 IB Higher Levels concurrently in DP1 + DP2 alongside service, sport, and SAS's distinctive 'Experiential Learning' programme — so weekday tutoring has to be compact. We schedule 60–90 minute 1:1 blocks in CST evenings (7–10 PM Shanghai time, two evenings/week), with Saturday morning slots (9 AM–noon CST) popular for full-length mock practice in March–April. All sessions are recorded for revision during the May exam-prep crunch.
Sourced from publicly available rankings, the school's own annual diploma results communications, and the IB Organization's programme authorisations.
SAS IB Diploma cohort averages are publicly reported in the school's annual academic reports. Biology HL is one of the most popular Group 4 choices alongside Chemistry HL and the AP Biology stream. SAS does not publish IB diploma averages in the same year-by-year format as some UK / EU IB schools; the school's overall academic profile is regarded among the strongest in mainland China.
SAS graduates matriculate predominantly to US universities — Ivy League (Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Columbia, UPenn, Brown, Cornell, Dartmouth), Stanford, MIT, the UC system (Berkeley, UCLA, San Diego, Irvine, Davis), Northwestern, Johns Hopkins, Duke, Georgetown, NYU, USC, Carnegie Mellon. For Biology HL students, common pathways include US pre-med (with the additional MCAT requirement after undergrad), US biological sciences majors, and US BS/MD direct-entry programs. UK, Canadian, and Australian university matriculation also strong but less common given the AP/US-centric school profile.
SAS IB Biology follows the standard two-year DP track with IA topic selection in late DP1 and submission early DP2; EE submission in DP2 for those choosing Biology as their EE subject. Our coaching aligns: HL conceptual reinforcement and Paper 2 mark-scheme drilling during DP1, IA mentorship through the data-analysis and evaluation phase, then full-length Paper 1 and Paper 2 mocks across November DP2 mocks and the May final-exam window. CST evening sessions (7–10 PM Shanghai) fit SAS's typical 3:15 PM dismissal + 4–6 PM activities + 7+ PM homework block. For students who also take AP Biology in parallel (rare but possible at SAS given the AP Capstone track), we coach both syllabi with overlap-aware scheduling — AP exam in mid-May, IB Bio finals also in May, so April–May is intensive but manageable with the right plan.

Cerebrum Biology Academy is biology-only across NEET, Biology Olympiads (NSEB / INBO / IBO + USABO / BBO), IB Biology, AP Biology, and board Biology (CBSE, ICSE, IGCSE, A-Level). The SAS context stays attached when you switch from IB to NEET or Olympiad enquiries — your counsellor knows where your child studies.
IB + NEET integrated track for India-returning families — keep AIIMS / state medical via NEET as an option even while based at SAS.
IBO and country-level olympiads (USABO / BBO / equivalents). The IB HL syllabus overlaps meaningfully with the Olympiad core.
Beyond IB: CBSE / ICSE / IGCSE / A-Level / AP Biology, exam-only crash courses, year-round Biology support. Useful for SAS families with siblings on different curricula or students adding AP Bio alongside IB.
