Morphology of Flowering Plants is a diagram-intensive chapter contributing 4-6 marks to NEET through questions on external structure identification, modification types, and floral formulas. Root modifications include storage roots (fusiform in radish, conical in carrot, napiform in turnip), pneumatophores (breathing roots in Rhizophora mangroves), and prop roots (Banyan tree). Stem modifications include rhizome (ginger), tuber (potato, with eyes being nodes), bulb (onion, with fleshy scale leaves), and corm (Colocasia). Leaf modifications include tendrils (pea), spines (cactus, reducing water loss), and phyllode (Australian Acacia, where the petiole becomes leaf-like). Floral characters use a standardised description system: calyx (sepals), corolla (petals), androecium (stamens), and gynoecium (carpels), with notation for fusion (gamosepalous vs polysepalous) and ovary position (epigynous, perigynous, hypogynous). NEET tests these modifications through diagram identification and function matching.
Three plant families are prescribed in the NCERT curriculum and frequently tested in NEET: Fabaceae (pea family), Solanaceae (potato family), and Liliaceae (lily family). Each family should be noted with its floral formula, floral diagram, characteristic features, and economic importance. Fabaceae has a zygomorphic flower with papilionaceous corolla (standard, wings, keel), diadelphous androecium (9+1 stamens), and monocarpellary gynoecium with marginal placentation producing a legume fruit. Solanaceae has actinomorphic flowers with fused petals (gamopetalous), epipetalous stamens (attached to petals), bicarpellary syncarpous gynoecium with axile placentation, and produces berry or capsule fruits. Liliaceae is a monocot family with trimerous flowers (parts in multiples of 3), superior ovary, and typically produces capsule or berry fruits. Writing floral formulas using standard symbols for symmetry, sex, fusion, and insertion is a skill directly tested in NEET board-style questions.
Diagram-based identification of plant modifications is a high-frequency NEET question type.
These three families are explicitly prescribed in NCERT and directly tested.
Converting a verbal flower description into formula notation tests comprehension of floral characters.
