The Plant Kingdom chapter covers the classification of the kingdom Plantae into five major groups based on progressive structural complexity: Algae (thallophytes), Bryophytes (amphibians of the plant world), Pteridophytes (first vascular plants), Gymnosperms (naked-seeded plants), and Angiosperms (enclosed-seeded flowering plants). NEET tests the distinguishing characteristics of each group: algae lack true roots, stems, and leaves; bryophytes have the gametophyte as the dominant generation; pteridophytes are the first plants with a vascular system (xylem and phloem); gymnosperms have exposed ovules on megasporophylls; and angiosperms have ovules enclosed in ovaries that develop into fruits. Algae are further classified into Chlorophyceae (green, e.g., Chlamydomonas, Spirogyra), Phaeophyceae (brown, e.g., Fucus, Sargassum), and Rhodophyceae (red, e.g., Polysiphonia, Gracilaria) based on pigment types and storage products.
Understanding the alternation of generations is crucial for NEET Plant Kingdom questions. All plants exhibit alternation between a haploid gametophyte generation (produces gametes by mitosis) and a diploid sporophyte generation (produces spores by meiosis). The relative dominance of each generation varies across plant groups. In bryophytes, the gametophyte is dominant and independent while the sporophyte is dependent and attached to the gametophyte. In pteridophytes and higher plants, the sporophyte becomes dominant. NEET questions test life cycle patterns: haplontic (dominant gametophyte, as in most algae), diplontic (dominant sporophyte, as in all seed plants), and haplo-diplontic (both generations are multicellular and free-living, as in bryophytes and some algae like Ectocarpus). Specific life cycle diagrams of Funaria (moss) showing the protonema, gametophore, and sporophyte stages are frequently tested in NEET.
