Where the 2026 cycle stands — the Open Exam (February) and Semifinal (March) are complete, the National Finals run 20–30 June 2027, and Team USA heads to the IBO in July. Below: the recurring USABO calendar, how cutoffs and advancement have worked across 2022–2024, and a tracker that also looks ahead to the 2027 cycle.
Exam dates and results are confirmed by the Center for Excellence in Education (CEE), which administers USABO. CEE does not pre-announce a fixed advancement cutoff — it publishes results per cycle — so we describe windows as "expected" and never invent a score threshold.
Stage-by-stage windows that repeat each cycle. The 2026 Open and Semifinal have already run on this calendar; the same windows apply to the 2027 cycle. CEE confirms exact dates each autumn.
Format: 50 MCQ, 50 minutes, school-administered, single sitting
Next step: Top performers advance to the Semifinal (the advancing field is set by CEE each year)
Format: 120-minute online exam in three parts: multiple choice, multiple true/false, and short answer or essay
Next step: Top ~20 students nationally are designated USABO Finalists
Format: Multi-day camp at a host university — theory, lab, and ethics rounds
Next step: Top 4 form the US team for the IBO
Format: Hosted by the year's designated country — 80+ nations compete
Next step: Medals (Gold ~10%, Silver ~20%, Bronze ~30%)

CEE does not pre-announce a fixed Open Exam cutoff. The score needed to advance to the Semifinal — and the size of the semifinalist field — vary each year with the actual score distribution, and CEE publishes results per cycle to member schools. Treat any year-to-year figure as a moving target, not a guaranteed threshold.
How to use these: because CEE doesn't publish a fixed cutoff, use timed past-Open scores only as a personal calibration tool — track your trend across several papers rather than chasing a specific number. The stronger and more consistent your timed performance, the better positioned you are for the Semifinal.
We'll notify you within 24 hours of each CEE release — including the next cycle's Open cutoff and Semifinalist list — plus next-steps guidance for either outcome.
