How to prepare for both A-Level Biology (Cambridge 9700, Edexcel IAL, AQA) and NEET simultaneously. Syllabus overlap, gap topics, and month-by-month dual study plan.
Remember these points for your NEET preparation
A-Level Biology (AS + A2) provides one of the strongest foundations for NEET among international curricula. Whether you're studying Cambridge (9700), Edexcel (IAL), or AQA, about 50% of the NEET syllabus overlaps. Here's how to leverage your A-Level preparation for NEET success.
| Topic | Cambridge 9700 | Edexcel IAL | AQA | NEET |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cell Biology | Excellent | Good | Excellent | Required |
| Biological Molecules | Excellent | Good | Excellent | Required |
| DNA & Gene Expression | Excellent | Good | Good | Required |
| Genetics (Mendel + Molecular) | Good | Good | Good | Required |
| Transport in Plants | Good | Good | Good | Required |
| Transport in Animals | Good | Good | Good | Required (deeper) |
| Gas Exchange | Good | Good | Good | Required |
| Infectious Disease | Good | Good | Excellent | Required |
| Ecology | Good | Good | Good | Required (deeper) |

| Human Reproduction | Partial | Partial | Partial | Required (detailed) |
| Biotechnology | Partial (A2) | Partial (A2) | Partial (A2) | Required (detailed) |
| Biomolecule Chemistry | Good | Good | Good | Required (NCERT-specific) |
Overall overlap: Cambridge: ~52% | Edexcel: ~48% | AQA: ~50%
A-Level students have advantages in certain areas:
These skills make A-Level students better at NEET's application-based questions that are increasing every year.
| Topic | NEET Weightage | Why It's Missing in A-Level |
|---|---|---|
| Plant Anatomy & Morphology | 8-10% | A-Level focuses on physiology, not anatomy |
| Human Reproduction (detailed) | 8-10% | A-Level covers basics but not gametogenesis, embryology detail |
| Animal Kingdom Classification | 4-5% | A-Level doesn't do phylum-by-phylum classification |
| Plant Kingdom Classification | 3-4% | Same — no detailed taxonomy |
| Biotechnology Applications | 5-7% | A-Level covers basics but not Bt cotton, gene therapy, GMO detail |
| Topic | NEET Weightage |
|---|---|
| Structural Organisation in Animals (tissue types) | 3-4% |
| Animal Husbandry | 2-3% |
| Microbes in Human Welfare | 2-3% |
| Strategies for Food Enhancement | 2-3% |
| Environmental Issues (Indian context) | 2-3% |
| Month | A-Level Topics | NEET Add-On (1.5 hours/day) |
|---|---|---|
| Sep | Cells, Biological Molecules | NCERT 11 Unit 1 (Diversity in Living World) |
| Oct | Enzymes, Cell Membranes | NCERT 11 Unit 2 (Structural Organisation) |
| Nov | Cell Division, Nucleic Acids | NCERT 11 Unit 3 (Cell: Structure & Function) |
| Dec | Transport in Plants | NCERT 11 Unit 4 (Plant Physiology) |
| Jan | Transport in Animals | NCERT 11 Unit 5 (Human Physiology) |
| Feb | Gas Exchange, Infectious Disease | NEET Class 11 revision + mock tests |
| Mar | AS Mock Exams | Light NEET revision |
| Apr-May | AS Exams | Full NEET prep for gap topics |
| Jun-Aug | Summer Break | Intensive: NCERT Class 12 Units 1-3 |
| Month | A-Level Topics | NEET Add-On (2 hours/day) |

| Sep | Energy, Respiration, Photosynthesis | NCERT 12 Unit 4-5 (Biotech, Ecology) |
| Oct | Homeostasis, Coordination | NEET mock tests (weekly) |
| Nov | Genetics, Selection, Evolution | Revision of gap topics |
| Dec | A2 Mocks | Full NEET mock tests |
| Jan-Mar | A2 Final Prep | Parallel NEET intensive |
| Apr-May | A-Level Exams | NEET exam (May) |
Our A-Level Biology tutoring program includes NEET preparation:
Cambridge (9700) has the best NEET overlap due to deeper molecular biology content. Edexcel IAL is second. All three boards require similar gap-filling for NEET.
NEET requires Class 12 equivalent qualification. A-Levels are recognized as equivalent by NTA. You can appear for NEET after completing AS+A2.
1.5-2 hours daily during the A-Level year. During school holidays, increase to 4-5 hours for gap topics.
Not directly (NEET has no practical exam), but they help with understanding and with Biology Olympiad preparation. The analytical skills transfer to NEET's tricky questions.
Check dates each year. If they clash, prioritize A-Level exams and take NEET the following attempt (NEET has no limit on attempts for most students).
