How much of NEET Biology does AP Biology cover — and the other way round? Every NCERT unit mapped to an AP unit, the chapters that exist in only one exam, and the plan for each direction: AP student adding NEET, NEET student sitting AP, parent choosing a curriculum.
Remember these points for your NEET preparation
Short answer: about 60% of the NCERT Class 11–12 Biology chapters have a counterpart in AP Biology's eight units, but only about 40% of NEET Biology marks transfer from an AP course — the number we use in our AP-to-NEET relearning guide. The gap between the two figures is the whole story: NEET asks 90 questions at NCERT-sentence precision across every chapter with equal indifference; AP asks 60 questions and 6 free-responses that reward reasoning about a narrower set of concepts. A topic can be "covered" in both and still be examined in ways that share almost nothing.
This is the reference table for three families who search for it in slightly different words: the Indian student in an AP or American-curriculum school (Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Dubai, Singapore) who wants NEET; the NRI or returning family whose child has AP Biology and is now aiming at MBBS in India; and the NEET-track student who wants an AP score for a US application. Percentages are our estimates from teaching both; chapter lists follow NCERT and the NEET Biology syllabus page, and unit weightings are the College Board's.
| NEET Biology | AP Biology | |
|---|---|---|
| Set by | National Testing Agency; syllabus = NCERT Class 11 and 12 | College Board (Course and Exam Description) |
| Structure | 10 NCERT units, ~36 chapters, Botany and Zoology in roughly equal halves | 8 units with published exam weightings, four "Big Ideas" |
| Paper | 90 MCQs · 360 of 720 marks · +4 / −1 · about 100 minutes' share of a 3-hour paper | 60 MCQs (90 min) + 6 free-response (90 min); scored 1–5 |
| What earns marks | Recall of NCERT lines, diagrams, tables and examples — about 95% of questions trace to the textbook | Applying concepts, reading data, designing experiments, writing explanations |
| Depth | Wide and shallow-to-medium, uniformly across all chapters | Narrow and deep on cell, molecular, genetics, evolution and ecology |
| Practicals | None in the exam | 13 required labs, assessed through the exam's data questions |
| When | May (one sitting a year) | May (one sitting a year) |
Rows follow NCERT's ten units. Full means an AP student has met the topic at or above NEET depth; Partial means AP names it but NEET's chapter goes wider or asks specifics AP never does; None means AP does not teach it.
| NCERT unit (chapters) | AP unit(s) | Coverage | Our estimate of NEET-mark transfer |
|---|---|---|---|
| Diversity in the Living World — The Living World · Biological Classification · Plant Kingdom · Animal Kingdom | Unit 7 (phylogeny, cladistics) only | None–Partial | ~10% — AP does the method; NEET wants five-kingdom detail, algal and bryophyte life cycles, phylum characters |
| Structural Organisation in Plants and Animals — Morphology of Flowering Plants · Anatomy of Flowering Plants · Structural Organisation in Animals | — | None | ~0% — root, stem, leaf, flower, inflorescence, plant tissues, animal tissues and the cockroach/earthworm/frog are absent from AP |
| Cell Structure and Function — Cell: The Unit of Life · Biomolecules · Cell Cycle and Cell Division | Units 1, 2, 4 | Full | ~80% — the strongest overlap; add NCERT's specific examples and the prokaryote/eukaryote table |
| Plant Physiology — Photosynthesis in Higher Plants · Respiration in Plants · Plant Growth and Development | Unit 3 (photosynthesis, respiration) | Partial | ~45% — energetics transfers; C4/CAM detail, RQ, growth regulators, photoperiodism and vernalisation do not |
| Human Physiology — Breathing and Exchange of Gases · Body Fluids and Circulation · Excretory Products · Locomotion and Movement · Neural Control · Chemical Coordination | Unit 4 (feedback, signalling) in passing | None–Partial | ~15% — the 2019 AP redesign removed organ-system physiology; NEET has six chapters of it |
| Reproduction — Sexual Reproduction in Flowering Plants · Human Reproduction · Reproductive Health | — | None | ~5% — meiosis and gametogenesis concepts help; the chapters themselves are new |
| Genetics and Evolution — Principles of Inheritance and Variation · Molecular Basis of Inheritance · Evolution | Units 5, 6, 7 | Full | ~85% — AP goes deeper than NEET here; learn NCERT's named experiments and examples |
| Biology and Human Welfare — Human Health and Disease · Microbes in Human Welfare | Unit 2 and 4 fragments (immune signalling) | None–Partial | ~15% — pathogens, drugs, vaccines, sewage treatment and biogas are NCERT-only |
| Biotechnology — Principles and Processes · Applications | Unit 6 (biotech tools) | Partial | ~55% — PCR, restriction enzymes, vectors transfer; Bt cotton, RNAi, gene therapy examples and bioreactor detail are NCERT-specific |
| Ecology — Organisms and Populations · Ecosystem · Biodiversity and Conservation | Unit 8 | Full | ~75% — population and ecosystem ecology transfer; NCERT's Indian examples, biodiversity numbers and pyramids need learning |
Weighting these by NEET's chapter distribution gives the ~40% headline. The three heaviest NEET blocks for a typical paper — human physiology, diversity plus structural organisation, and reproduction — are exactly the three AP never reaches.
On the rationalised syllabus: NTA trimmed NCERT for NEET 2024 onwards (Transport in Plants, Mineral Nutrition, Digestion and Absorption, and a few Class 12 chapters moved out; some topics moved in). The map above follows the current list; check the NEET 2027 syllabus before planning a chapter you do not see here.
Read this half if you are a NEET student adding an AP score.
A strong NEET student typically needs 8–12 weeks of format practice plus Units 4 and 6 to reach a 5. The content is largely there; the way of answering is not.

1. AP student adding NEET (the NRI / international-school case). Budget a year of NCERT, not a term. Start with the units marked None — structural organisation, human physiology, reproduction, human welfare — because they are pure gain, then relearn the Full units in NCERT's words, since NEET quotes the book. The AP-to-NEET relearning guide has the month-by-month order, and the NEET Biology syllabus guide has chapter weightages to prioritise by.
2. NEET student sitting AP Biology. Take AP in the same academic year as NEET or the one before; the May dates coincide, so plan the AP as a lighter second exam. Add Units 4 and 6 depth and twelve weeks of past-paper practice with the free-response rubric. Do not let AP's breadth of reasoning pull time from NCERT recall in the final three months — NEET is the higher-stakes paper for most families.
3. Parent choosing a curriculum for a medicine-bound child. If the target is MBBS in India, the CBSE/NCERT route is the shorter path by about a year of relearning; an AP or IB school is workable with a parallel NEET programme from Class 11. If the target is a US or UK medical route, AP Biology (or IB HL) plus a research or olympiad credential matters more than NEET, and the MCAT-vs-NEET comparison is the next page to read. If you are keeping both doors open, IB HL overlaps NEET more than AP does (about 55% against 40%) — see the IB-to-NEET guide.
No. About 40% of NEET Biology marks are reachable from AP alone, and the missing 60% is concentrated in human physiology, diversity, structural organisation and reproduction — whole NCERT units AP never teaches. Plan a year of NCERT-based preparation alongside or after AP.
It means the cell, genetics and ecology chapters will come quickly and you can reason well. It does not predict NEET marks, because NEET rewards NCERT-line recall across all chapters equally, and half of them are new to an AP student. AP-5 students who relearn NCERT properly do very well; those who assume the 5 carries them do not.
Effectively yes. Around 95% of NEET Biology questions trace to NCERT sentences, diagrams and tables, and the phrasing of options follows the book. The AP textbook is useful for understanding; NCERT is what the paper is written from.
No — AP's plant content is photosynthesis, respiration and a little on hormones. NEET's Plant Kingdom, Morphology, Anatomy, Sexual Reproduction in Flowering Plants and most of Plant Growth and Development are not in AP at all, and together they are a large share of the botany half.
Yes. NEET is open to NRI, OCI and PIO candidates who meet the Class 12 subject requirements, and NRI-quota seats exist in many colleges. Eligibility rules and quota details change; confirm the current NTA bulletin and see our NRI hub.
Different kinds of hard. NEET's difficulty is volume and precision: ~36 chapters, 90 questions, negative marking, and answers that hinge on a word in NCERT. AP's difficulty is reasoning: unfamiliar experiments, data interpretation and written explanation on a narrower syllabus. Students who are strong at one are often surprised by the other.
No. Indian medical admission is by NEET rank and the Class 12 board result; AP scores are not considered. They help for US and other international applications, which is why families keeping both routes open take both exams.
For a student finishing AP Biology in Grade 11 with a target of NEET in the Class 12 year: about 10–12 months of parallel NCERT work, heaviest in human physiology and diversity. Starting the bridge in the AP year itself is the difference between one attempt and two.
