How AP Biology free-response points are actually awarded — the three question types, what verbs like justify, predict, and describe each demand, and the specific ways strong students lose points they should have kept.

The multiple-choice section rewards knowing the right answer. The free-response section rewards showing your reasoning in the exact shape a rubric is built to recognise. Two students who understand a concept equally well can score very differently on the same FRQ, because one of them writes to the rubric and the other writes an essay.
This is a guide to how that rubric actually works: the question types, what the common verbs demand, and the specific habits that separate a 6/9 from a 9/9 on a long FRQ.

Every FRQ is graded against a published, point-by-point scoring guideline — not a holistic impression of your answer. A grader (or "reader," in College Board's terminology) checks your response against a list of acceptable statements and awards a point each time your answer matches one. This matters enormously for strategy: your job on an FRQ is not to write a good essay about biology, it is to hit the specific, checkable claims the rubric is looking for.

Across a typical FRQ set, questions tend to draw on one (or a blend) of three skills:
You're given a research question, a proposed method, or a described experiment, and asked to design a controlled study, identify a flaw, propose a control, or predict a confound. The rubric rewards concrete, specific answers: naming the actual independent and dependent variables, stating what is held constant, and identifying a real control group — not a general statement that "a control should be used."
You're given a graph, table, or data set and asked to describe a trend, perform a calculation, or draw a conclusion. Points here are awarded for: correctly reading the data (with units), performing the calculation correctly (partial credit is common if your method is right but your arithmetic slips), and stating a conclusion that is actually supported by the numbers you were given — not a conclusion that happens to be biologically true in general.
You're given a claim or scenario and asked to explain a mechanism, justify a prediction, or connect two biological processes. This is where content depth and the ability to state a mechanism explicitly both matter — vague causal language ("this affects the cell") rarely earns points; naming the specific structure, molecule, or process does.
Most long FRQs combine at least two of these across their sub-parts (for example: design an experiment, then analyse a data set from a similar experiment, then justify a prediction from the results).
College Board's FRQs use a defined, consistent set of task verbs. Answering to the wrong verb — for example, describing when the question asked you to justify — is one of the most common and most avoidable ways points are lost, because the rubric checks for the verb's specific requirement, not just biological correctness.

| Predict | State a specific, defensible outcome based on the given information — a vague direction ("it will change") is rarely enough; state which direction and, where relevant, why. |
| Identify | Name the correct term, structure, or value — brief, no explanation needed unless the question also says "and explain." |
| Compare | Address both similarities and differences explicitly — addressing only one side loses points even if what you wrote is accurate. |
A response that is biologically correct but answers the wrong verb (for example, restating what happens when the question asked you to justify why it happens) typically will not earn the point, because the rubric is checking for the reasoning step, not just the fact.
Take a single scenario — enzyme activity dropping when temperature rises past an enzyme's optimum — and see how the required answer changes with the verb alone, content held constant:
Same fact, three different required answers. Students who write the "describe" version of the answer to a "justify" question have said something true and still lose the point, because the rubric is checking for the reasoning connective, not the fact alone.
