How the AP Biology exam is actually built — the two sections, the timing, the 8 units and their approximate weighting, the six science practices, and how to read the Course and Exam Description instead of relying on someone else's summary of it.

Most students preparing for AP Biology learn the content before they learn the exam. That order causes avoidable point loss — not because the content is wrong, but because the exam rewards specific skills (the "science practices") on top of content, and a lot of preparation time gets spent without ever touching those skills directly.
This is a guide to how the exam is actually built: the two sections, the timing, the 8 units and their approximate weight, what the science practices test, and how to read the official Course and Exam Description (CED) instead of a third-party summary of it.

Total exam time is 3 hours. A four-function calculator is permitted throughout, and a formula/equation reference sheet is provided for both sections — you are not expected to memorise the statistical formulas (chi-square, standard deviation, Hardy-Weinberg, and so on), only to know when and how to apply them.
Recent administrations have moved to a hybrid digital format: Section I is delivered through College Board's Bluebook testing application, while Section II prompts are shown on screen but answered by hand in a paper booklet. Confirm the current-year administration format on apstudents.collegeboard.org before exam day, since digital testing details are the part most likely to change year to year.
Sixty questions in 90 minutes is roughly 90 seconds per question, though the real pacing is uneven — some questions are single-concept recall you should answer in 20 seconds, others are data-interpretation sets built around a shared stimulus (a graph, a table, an experimental setup) that take longer. A meaningful chunk of Section I is built around these stimulus-based question sets rather than isolated fact recall, which is why science-practice skills matter as much as content here.
In practice, Section I mixes two question styles. Discrete questions stand alone — a single concept, a single answer, quick to work through if you know the content. Set-based questions share a common stimulus (a figure, an experimental description, a data table) and ask 2-4 questions off it. The set-based questions are where pacing actually breaks down for most students, because reading and interpreting the stimulus takes real time before you can even start answering — budget for this rather than assuming every question takes the same 90 seconds. A practical pacing habit: skim the whole section once for the discrete questions you can answer immediately, then spend your remaining time on the stimulus sets, rather than working strictly top to bottom and running short on the harder sets at the end.

The AP Biology course is organised into 8 units in the CED. Each unit is assigned an approximate percentage range of the exam — College Board publishes these as ranges, not fixed numbers, because the exact mix of questions varies by administration.

The three heaviest units — Unit 6 (Gene Expression and Regulation), Unit 7 (Natural Selection), and Unit 3 (Cellular Energetics) — carry the largest combined share of the exam. Treat that as a study-priority signal, not a guarantee: the published ranges shift slightly between CED revisions, and the only authoritative source for the current numbers is the current-year CED itself. We deliberately don't reproduce an exact percentage table here, because tables copied from older CEDs (or from sites that never checked the source) are one of the most common ways students end up studying against a stale weighting.
What to actually do with this: don't ignore the lighter units — every unit still appears on the exam and Section II questions frequently combine ideas from two units (for example, cellular energetics reasoning applied inside an ecology data set). Use the weighting to set your review order and depth, not to skip material.
The weighting table gets misused in two predictable ways. First, treating a "heavy" unit as the only thing worth studying — the lightest-weighted unit still accounts for real, scoreable questions, and skipping it outright caps your ceiling more than the weighting table implies. Second, assuming the weighting range applies question-for-question to Section II the same way it does to Section I — free-response questions are often written to span more than one unit at once, so a single long FRQ can pull from, say, both cellular energetics and ecology in the same prompt. Weighting is a study-priority tool, not a syllabus you can cut down to three units.
Content alone does not predict your score. College Board organises the skills tested — separately from the content units — into six science practices. In plain terms, across the exam you are expected to be able to:
Every multiple-choice question and every FRQ is tagged to one or more of these practices in College Board's own item design. A student who has memorised Campbell cover to cover but has never practised, say, designing a controlled experiment from a scenario, will still lose points on Section II — not from missing content, but from an untrained skill.

The Course and Exam Description is the single authoritative source for content boundaries, unit weighting ranges, and sample questions with real scoring guidelines. It is long, but you don't need to read it cover to cover — you need to use it correctly:

You will find tables online claiming to convert a raw Section I + Section II score into a 1-5 composite score. Treat those with real skepticism. College Board does not publish the composite cut-offs, they are set after each administration based on that year's data, and they move — sometimes by several raw points — from year to year. A table built from one year's released data is not a reliable predictor for a different year. If you want to gauge your standing, the more honest approach is: work through official released exams under timed conditions, score your Section I against the official answer key, and score your Section II FRQs against the official scoring guidelines (ideally with a second, informed reader) — that tells you where your actual gaps are, which is more useful than a guessed number.
