The current IB Biology assessment model, explained end to end — Paper 1A vs Paper 1B, how Paper 2 differs, how HL extends SL, and why Paper 3 no longer exists. What to practise differently for each component.

If you learned IB Biology from an older sibling's notes, a hand-me-down revision guide, or a YouTube video filmed before 2023, you may be revising for a paper that no longer exists. This guide covers the current assessment model in full — what each component actually tests, how the marks are weighted, how HL extends SL, and how to prepare differently for each paper.
If you searched for "IB Biology Paper 3" and landed here, this is the answer — there is no Paper 3 under the current guide.
Under the previous (2016) guide, IB Biology had three external papers. Paper 3 assessed one elective Option — Neurobiology and Behaviour, Biotechnology and Bioinformatics, Ecology and Conservation, or Human Physiology — chosen by the school and taught as a separate unit.
The current guide (first teaching 2023, first exams May 2025) removed Options and Paper 3 entirely. That content did not disappear; it was folded into the AHL (additional higher level) layer inside the four core themes that HL students study in more depth than SL. There is no separate Options unit and no separate Options paper anymore. Everyone — SL and HL — is examined only through Paper 1 and Paper 2, plus the Internal Assessment (the Scientific Investigation).
The syllabus itself is also organised differently from the old topic list (Topics 1–11 plus Options A–D). It now runs across four unifying themes:
Content within each theme is also tagged by level of organisation (molecular, cellular, organism, ecosystem), which is how questions on Paper 1B and Paper 2 tend to be framed — a data set at the molecular level feeding into a question about ecosystem-level consequences, for instance. If your revision notes still reference "Topic 6: Human Physiology" or "Option D," they are describing a syllabus structure that has been replaced. The biology content overlaps substantially with the old syllabus, but the packaging, and the assessment built on top of it, does not.

Paper 1 and Paper 2 together make up roughly 80% of the final grade; the IA makes up the remaining 20%. Both SL and HL students sit the same three components — the difference is in the depth and volume of content within each one, not in the structure itself. Paper 1A is a straight multiple-choice paper — HL sits 40 questions, SL sits 30, each worth one mark, covering SL content plus (for HL) AHL material. There is no negative marking, so every question should get an answer, even a guessed one, before time runs out.
What it actually tests: breadth and speed. Paper 1A rewards students who can recognise a concept instantly rather than reconstruct it from first principles. It is the paper where content gaps show up fastest, because there is no partial credit for "nearly right."
How to prepare differently for 1A:
Paper 1B is newer territory for anyone revising from older material, because it did not exist in its current form before the current guide. It sits directly after 1A, in the same exam session, and presents a small number of data-based questions — typically figures, tables, or graphs, often adapted from real research — each broken into several short-response sub-questions.
What it actually tests: Paper 1B is not asking you to recall content so much as apply it to data you have never seen before. A typical sequence within one question might ask you to read a value off a graph, calculate a rate or percentage change, identify a trend, and then explain the trend using biological reasoning — moving from simple extraction to interpretation within the same question.
This is where Paper 1B connects to the practical scheme your class has been running all along: the skills it rewards — reading axes correctly, spotting anomalies, linking a pattern in the data to an underlying mechanism — are the same skills you build while running your own experiments for the Scientific Investigation. The difference is that on Paper 1B you're reading someone else's data under exam pressure, with no chance to go back and adjust the method. How to prepare differently for 1B:
Paper 2 is the longer, higher-stakes paper — a mix of structured data-analysis questions and extended-response questions that carry the biggest mark tariffs on the exam. This is where command terms matter most: the gap between a "describe" answer and an "explain" answer, or between a one-sided argument and a genuine "discuss," is worth several marks on a single question. What it actually tests: sustained biological reasoning, not just knowledge recall. A six-mark "discuss" or "evaluate" question is assessing whether you can build and structure an argument under time pressure, using biology as the evidence. Data-analysis sections on Paper 2 tend to go deeper than Paper 1B — more steps, more layers of interpretation, and more integration across themes (a question might open with a molecular-level data set and close by asking you to reason about ecosystem-level consequences).

HL and SL sit the same three-component structure — Paper 1 (1A + 1B), Paper 2, and the IA — at both levels. The difference is depth and volume, not shape.
At the level of raw structure: HL's Paper 1A carries more questions than SL's, and HL's Paper 1B carries a higher total mark count, because HL students are also examined on AHL content layered into each theme. HL's Paper 1 has been reported at roughly 75 marks in total (40 from 1A, 35 from 1B) against a shorter SL paper; Paper 2 similarly runs to a higher total mark count at HL than at SL. The percentage weightings — roughly 36% for Paper 1, 44% for Paper 2, 20% for the IA — are the same at both levels; what changes is how much content and how many questions sit inside that weighting.
Practically, this means an HL student cannot prepare by simply "doing the SL syllabus and a bit more." AHL content is woven into the same themes SL students study, at greater depth, and it is examinable on both papers, not held back for a separate section. IB Biology is not a niche curriculum in India — it is taught in a large and growing number of Indian schools, from long-established international schools to Indian-curriculum schools that have added an IB Diploma track alongside CBSE or ICSE. Everything covered above — the paper structure, the weighting, the command terms, the removal of Paper 3 — is identical for an IB Biology student in Gurgaon, Mumbai, or Bangalore as it is for one in London or Toronto. The IB sets one global assessment model; there is no India-specific variant of Paper 1, Paper 2, or the IA, and no separate grade boundaries for Indian schools.
What actually differs for an Indian IB student is not the exam itself but what comes after it. Most non-IB students in India spend Classes 11 and 12 preparing directly for NEET; an IB Biology student following the Diploma's four-theme syllabus is not building a NEET-aligned knowledge base in the same way by default — even though IB Biology and NEET biology share substantial common ground (human physiology, genetics, ecology, evolution). Treating "IB Biology revision" as one undifferentiated activity is a common mistake, because the three components reward genuinely different skills:
A revision timetable that gives equal time to all three papers every week, without distinguishing the skill each one rewards, tends to produce a student who is fluent in content but slow on 1B and structurally weak on Paper 2's extended response — the two areas where marks are lost even by students who know the biology.
It's worth flagging directly: grade boundaries for IB Biology are not fixed numbers you can revise toward. The IB recalculates them every examination session based on that session's overall performance, and publishes them afterward in the statistical bulletin for that session. A "you need 75% for a 7" figure circulating online is, at best, a snapshot from one past session — it is not a target for yours.
If you want to understand how your performance is likely to translate into a final grade, the more useful exercise is marking your own past-paper attempts strictly against the official mark scheme (not a model answer) and tracking your raw percentage across full papers over time, rather than anchoring to a boundary number that will not apply to your session.
It's gone for everyone on the current guide — there is no school-level choice to keep Options or Paper 3. Every student following the guide first taught from 2023 (first examined May 2025 onward) sits only Paper 1 and Paper 2, plus the IA.
Both SL and HL sit Paper 1B. The difference is the number of questions and total marks, not whether the component exists — SL's version is shorter than HL's, in line with SL's overall lower total mark count.
No — they're separate. The Scientific Investigation is the subject-specific Internal Assessment for Biology, worth 20% of your Biology grade. The Extended Essay is a separate, optional 4,000-word research paper that sits outside your six subject grades in the IB Diploma's core.
By weighting, Paper 2 (44%) has the largest single share of the grade, followed by Paper 1 as a whole (36%) and the IA (20%). But "prioritise by weighting" only works if your weaker paper isn't dragging your average down disproportionately — a diagnostic past paper for each component is worth more than guessing which one to prioritise.
