Three names, three different competitions. The DOE National Science Bowl is a six-subject school-team buzzer contest; the National Biology Bowl is biology-only for younger students; USABO is the biology olympiad that leads to Team USA. What each tests, when it runs, who can enter, and how they fit together.

Short answer: they are three different competitions that families routinely confuse. The National Science Bowl is the U.S. Department of Energy’s six-subject buzzer contest for school teams — biology is one category of six. The National Biology Bowl is a biology-only quiz competition for younger students, run by a different organiser. USABO, the USA Biology Olympiad, is a written biology examination for individuals in Grades 9–12 that leads through a Semifinal and National Finals to Team USA at the International Biology Olympiad. Format, subjects, grade band, calendar and payoff all differ; the table settles which is which, and the sections after it say which to enter, in what order, and how they combine.

The National Biology Bowl is the one built for you now; USABO is not open until Grade 9 and Science Bowl’s middle-school division is a team your school has to field. A Grade 9–12 student whose school has a Science Bowl team. Join it as the biology player, and prepare the biology category properly: what it tests, the calendar and how a specialist fits the team are on our Science Bowl biology page, with practice questions and the reasoning. Then sit the USABO Open in February — the speed you build for buzzers is exactly what the 50-questions-in-50-minutes Open rewards.
A Grade 9–12 student aiming at the top biology credential. USABO, without question: it is the only one of the three that leads to the International Biology Olympiad, and a Semifinalist or Finalist placing is the strongest biology signal a US applicant can carry. The calendar cooperates: Science Bowl regionals run January–March, the USABO Open is in February, and neither collides with AP exams in May. A student can be a Science Bowl biology player and a USABO Open candidate in the same winter with one preparation.

School-based teams and home-school groups of four or five students with a teacher who serves as coach; private clubs cannot register. Registration for 2027 opens on 5 October 2026 and closes three weeks before each regional.
For a biology-focused college application, USABO — because it is the national olympiad and leads to Team USA at the IBO. A Science Bowl National Finals appearance is a strong team credential; the Biology Bowl is a younger-student competition.
We coach the biology in all three: the National Biology Bowl programme for grades 6–8, the Science Bowl biology category for school-team players, and USABO from the Open Exam onwards. We do not coach Science Bowl teams as such — teams are school-based with a teacher-coach.

USABO is open to students in grades 9-12. Middle schoolers should look at Science Olympiad Division B, which is built for grades 6-9.
Most students work through Campbell over 6-9 months. The Semifinal leans on data interpretation and experimental design, so drill those alongside content.
Registration goes through a school or an approved centre. If your school does not participate, a teacher can register as a new centre with CEE.
