Format: Online biology contest. Because divisions are separated by school level, your child is measured against peers, not older students.

IJSO is the one genuinely elite option on this list, and it comes with two important honesty caveats.

The big caveat — it is integrated science, not biology. IJSO is not a biology olympiad. It combines physics, chemistry, and biology into one competition, including a hands-on practical component. A student who loves biology but has not built comparable strength in physics and chemistry will struggle. So IJSO is best viewed as an aspirational, long-horizon goal for a strong, well-rounded science student — not the everyday biology contest most middle schoolers should start with.
