Human Physiology comprises six chapters covering the major organ systems, and effective notes must organise each system around three pillars: anatomy (structure), physiology (function), and regulation (hormonal and neural control). For the circulatory system, notes should cover heart anatomy with four chambers, the conduction system (SA node, AV node, Bundle of His, Purkinje fibres), the cardiac cycle timing, and ECG interpretation. For the excretory system, the nephron is the functional unit, and notes should trace the journey of filtrate from Bowman's capsule through the PCT, loop of Henle (countercurrent mechanism), DCT, and collecting duct, noting what is reabsorbed and secreted at each segment. The key to effective physiology notes is connecting structure to function: the length of the loop of Henle determines urine concentrating ability, the thin walls of alveoli enable gas exchange, and the villi of the small intestine increase absorption surface area.
Chemical Coordination and Integration ties all organ systems together through hormonal regulation, making it both a standalone chapter and a key to understanding the other five physiology chapters. Notes should organise hormones by gland of origin: hypothalamus (releasing and inhibiting hormones), anterior pituitary (GH, TSH, ACTH, FSH, LH, Prolactin), posterior pituitary (ADH, Oxytocin), thyroid (T3, T4, Calcitonin), parathyroid (PTH), adrenal cortex (cortisol, aldosterone), adrenal medulla (adrenaline, noradrenaline), pancreas (insulin, glucagon), and gonads (testosterone, oestrogen, progesterone). For each hormone, note the target organ, specific action, and the disorder caused by hyper- or hypo-secretion. NEET frequently tests hormone-disorder matching: gigantism from excess GH in childhood, acromegaly from excess GH in adults, diabetes mellitus from insulin deficiency, and Addison's disease from adrenal cortex insufficiency.
