The Reproduction unit contributes 12-15 marks and is highly diagram-dependent. Human Reproduction notes must cover male and female reproductive system anatomy, gametogenesis (spermatogenesis and oogenesis), fertilisation, implantation, and embryonic development. Spermatogenesis in the seminiferous tubules progresses from spermatogonia through primary and secondary spermatocytes to spermatids and finally spermatozoa, supported by Sertoli cells and regulated by FSH and testosterone. Oogenesis begins in foetal life with oogonia forming primary oocytes arrested in prophase I; meiosis I completes at ovulation producing a secondary oocyte and first polar body, while meiosis II completes only upon fertilisation. The menstrual cycle involves coordinated hormonal changes: FSH stimulates follicular growth, rising oestrogen triggers the LH surge causing ovulation, and the corpus luteum produces progesterone to maintain the endometrium. NEET questions frequently present hormonal level graphs and ask students to identify the phase or event.
Sexual Reproduction in Flowering Plants covers flower anatomy, microsporogenesis and megasporogenesis, pollination mechanisms, double fertilisation, and seed and fruit development. Double fertilisation is unique to angiosperms: one sperm fuses with the egg to form the zygote (syngamy), while the other sperm fuses with the two polar nuclei to form the triploid primary endosperm nucleus (triple fusion). Embryo development follows a predictable pattern from zygote through globular, heart, torpedo, and mature embryo stages. Reproductive Health covers contraception methods classified as natural (rhythm, withdrawal), barrier (condom, diaphragm), hormonal (pills, implants), IUDs (Cu-T, LNG-20), and surgical (vasectomy, tubectomy). Sexually transmitted diseases including gonorrhoea, syphilis, genital herpes, HIV/AIDS, and hepatitis B are tested with their causative agents and symptoms. Assisted reproductive technologies like IVF, ZIFT, GIFT, and ICSI are important for 1-2 guaranteed questions.
| Contraception Type | Examples | Effectiveness |
|---|---|---|
| Natural Methods | Rhythm, withdrawal, lactational amenorrhoea | Low-Moderate |
| Barrier Methods | Condom, diaphragm, cervical cap | Moderate |
| Hormonal Methods | OC pills, Saheli, implants | High |
| IUDs | Cu-T, Cu-7, LNG-20, Multiload 375 | High |
| Surgical Methods | Vasectomy, tubectomy | Very High (permanent) |
