Indian National Biology Olympiad · India

The best books for INBO, and how to use them

INBO is the second round of the Indian pathway, sat by the students who clear NSEB. It is a genuine step up: the questions assume you have read beyond NCERT, and the marks are in reasoning rather than recall. This is the round where Campbell stops being enough on its own.

Pathway: NSEB → INBO → OCSC → Team of 4 → IBO

What INBO looks like

  • Timing: late January – early February (INBO 2026 was held on 1 February 2026)
  • Format: Theory-only examination — practical assessment begins at OCSC
  • Roughly 300 students sit INBO after NSEB
  • about 35 students advance to OCSC
  • Practical assessment begins at OCSC, not here

The reading list, in the order it is useful

Buying all of these at once is the most common and most expensive mistake in olympiad preparation. Start at the top.

  • Campbell Biology

    Core

    Urry, Cain, Wasserman, Minorsky, Orr

The one universal text. Every national olympiad on this list is written against material Campbell covers, and Singapore’s own olympiad body tells shortlisted students to read it. Get the latest edition and work it chapter by chapter rather than dipping.

  • Molecular Biology of the Cell

    Depth

Alberts, Heald, Johnson, Morgan, Raff, Roberts, Walter

Where you go when Campbell’s cell chapters stop being enough — which happens at the national round, not before. Read the chapters your diagnostic says you are losing marks on, not the whole book.

  • Concepts of Genetics

    Depth

    Klug, Cummings, Spencer, Palladino

Genetics carries roughly a fifth of the theory paper and is where problem-solving marks are won or lost. Klug drills the problem types; Campbell explains the concepts. You need both.

  • Animal Physiology

    Depth

    Hill, Wyse, Anderson

Animal anatomy and physiology is the single heaviest section on the theory paper. Hill gives you the comparative, mechanism-level treatment the questions assume.

  • Biology of Plants

    Depth

    Raven, Evert, Eichhorn

Plant anatomy and physiology is the section most students quietly skip and then lose marks on. School syllabi treat plants thinly everywhere; the olympiad does not.

  • Ecology: From Individuals to Ecosystems

    Reference

    Begon, Townsend, Harper

Ecology is a smaller share of the paper, so read selectively. Population dynamics and community interactions are the parts that actually get examined.

  • Animal Behavior: An Evolutionary Approach

    Reference

    John Alcock

Ethology is a small slice of the paper and the one section where a couple of focused weeks moves your score more than another month on cell biology.

We sell none of these and earn nothing if you buy them. Editions change; the advice does not.

How to actually use these

  1. 1

Campbell is assumed knowledge by this round, not the goal. If you are still learning from it, you are behind the students you are competing against.

  2. 2

Go deep on the two heaviest sections first: animal physiology and genetics. Together they are roughly 45% of the theory paper.

  3. 3

Work INBO and IBO past papers rather than more textbook chapters. At this level the constraint is applying what you know under pressure.

  4. 4

Plants and biosystematics are the classic INBO regrets. They are a small share of the paper and almost nobody prepares them, which makes them cheap marks.

  5. 5

Remember what you are aiming at: about 35 students advance to OCSC, and four students eventually represent India at IBO.

Questions we get

Do I need every book on this list for INBO?
No, and buying all of them is a common and expensive mistake. Campbell is the one genuinely universal text. The depth books are for the specific sections your past-paper performance says you are losing marks on — read those chapters, not those books.
Which edition should I buy?
The latest you can get, but do not let edition-hunting delay you. Biology at olympiad level does not turn over fast enough for an edition or two to matter more than starting three months earlier.
Are past papers more useful than textbooks?
Past the first round, yes. Reading builds the knowledge; papers build the ability to use it under time and under a format that punishes hesitation. Most students over-read and under-practise.
Can I prepare for INBO without coaching?
Many students do. What coaching adds is diagnosis — knowing which of the seven subject areas is actually costing you marks, rather than reading more of what you already know. If you can get that from your own error log honestly, you can do this alone.
