It is fast, fun, and it rewards curiosity across all of science rather than rote memorisation of one textbook.
This guide explains exactly what the Science Bee is, how the format works, how Indian students enter, and — most importantly — how a Class 6–8 student can prepare without pressure.
Quick answer: The Science Bee is an individual, buzzer-based science quiz run by International Academic Competitions. Class 6, 7 and 8 students each compete in their own division. It begins with a free online qualifying exam, and Indian students participate through the Asian division (International Science Bee).
The Science Bee is a quiz competition for individual students that tests knowledge of all aspects of science at a grade-appropriate level. Unlike a written Olympiad, the live rounds are buzzer-based: a question is read aloud, and the first student to buzz in with the correct answer scores the point.
The questions in the live rounds are written in a "pyramidal" style — they begin with a hard, obscure clue and get progressively easier as more of the paragraph is read. The student who knows the topic most deeply can buzz early; a student who knows a little can still get it by waiting for the easier clues. It rewards genuine understanding and nerve.

The Science Bee is careful about age fairness — a Class 6 student never competes head-to-head against a Class 8 student.
In the National Science Bee (Elementary & Middle School) format, students in 8th grade and younger compete, with separate divisions for 8th, 7th, 6th, 5th and 4th graders (and a combined division for 3rd grade and younger). Indian classes map directly: Class 6 → 6th-grade division, Class 7 → 7th, Class 8 → 8th.
In the International Science Bee (Asian division), students are grouped into four broader divisions — Elementary, Middle School, Junior Varsity, and Varsity — so Class 6–8 students generally sit in the Elementary / Middle School bands.
Every Science Bee pathway follows the same three-stage structure.
This is where everyone starts, and it is the friendliest part of the whole competition:
A parent or teacher registers as the student's sponsor, and the child takes the exam online. Qualifying is based on comparative performance — in the US format about 60% of test-takers advance; in the Asian division the top two-thirds (online finals) move forward. Because it is free and low-stakes, the ORQE is simply the best way to let a Class 6–8 child try competitive science with nothing to lose.
Students who clear the ORQE are invited to a Regional, held online or in person (in Asia, typically between December and May). This is the first taste of the live buzzer format:

Indian students participate through International Academic Competitions' Asian Division, which runs the International Science Bee for students across Asia and India. The pathway is the same three stages — free ORQE → Regional Finals (online or in-person, Dec–May) → Asian Championships.
Because the qualifying exam and the online regional finals can be taken from home, a student in Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru or a smaller town can compete without travelling — and NRI families abroad can enter through their local division too.
A note on dates and fees: The ORQE is free. In-person US regionals carry a fee (around $50 per tournament). Asian-division fees and the exact 2026 calendar vary by region and are confirmed on the official registration pages — always check the current dates before you plan. You do not need a coaching marathon for the Science Bee. You need consistent, curious exposure.
1. Read a little, widely, every day. Encyclopaedias, How It Works-style magazines, quality science YouTube (Bozeman Science, SciShow Kids, Khan Academy). Breadth beats depth at this stage.
2. Master the NCERT science first. The Class 6–8 NCERT science books are your child's core syllabus. Understanding them well already covers a large share of grade-level questions.
3. Give biology and the human body extra love. Biology is one of the richest sources of Bee questions and the most "askable" — the human body, plants, animals, and diseases come up constantly, and it is the subject where a strong foundation compounds most into later Olympiads and NEET.
4. Practise buzzing. Play quiz games at home. Read a question aloud and race to answer. The skill of committing to an answer quickly is half the competition.
5. Take the free ORQE — this year. There is no downside. It tells you exactly where your child stands and turns "competition" from an abstract worry into a familiar experience.

Is the Science Bee only for "toppers"? No. The free ORQE is designed for any curious student. Most children who enjoy science do far better than their parents expect.
Is it the same as the Science Olympiad (NSO/NSTSE)? No. Those are written, MCQ-based school Olympiads. The Science Bee's live rounds are buzzer-based and spoken, and it spans a wider range of sciences. They complement each other beautifully.
My child loves biology but is shy about physics/chemistry — should we still try? Absolutely. The breadth is a feature: your child will discover new favourite topics, and biology strength alone can carry a lot of early rounds.
How much does it cost to start? The online qualifying exam is free. You only encounter fees if your child advances to certain in-person regional tournaments.

USABO is open to students in grades 9-12. Middle schoolers should look at Science Olympiad Division B, which is built for grades 6-9.
Most students work through Campbell over 6-9 months. The Semifinal leans on data interpretation and experimental design, so drill those alongside content.
