Parents usually arrive at this question after hearing about the Science Bee from a friend, a school notice, or a sibling's classmate — and the first thing they want to know is simple: which division does my child actually compete in?
The answer is more straightforward than most competitions. Science Bee divisions are organised by current grade, not by age, ability, or a placement test. This guide walks through the full ladder — from Elementary through high school — so you can place your child correctly and know what to expect at each stage.

Science Bee divisions are grade-banded:
A student is placed by the grade they are currently enrolled in at the time of registration. There is no separate qualifying test to "move up" a division, and a child cannot request to compete in an older division to chase a bigger challenge. The system is built so that every match-up is grade-fair.
This is the entry point for the youngest competitors. Because it spans multiple grades under one banner, the content sits at a genuinely introductory level — general science awareness rather than curriculum depth. Expect:
What a parent of a 5th grader (or younger) should expect: this is best treated as a fun, low-pressure first taste of competitive science. The free ORQE is genuinely free to try, and there is no meaningful downside to attempting it. Do not build a study plan around Elementary Division results — the value here is entirely in the experience, not the outcome.
This is where the Science Bee starts to resemble a "real" competition, and it is the band our Class 6–8 guide covers in detail. Each grade — 6th, 7th, 8th — has its own separate division, so a Class 6 student is never matched against a Class 8 student.

What a parent of a 6th, 7th or 8th grader should expect: this is the sweet spot for building genuine science curiosity and exam temperament without academic pressure. A child who takes the free ORQE at 6th grade and again at 8th grade will notice real growth — not just in knowledge, but in composure under a buzzer. This is also the band where the habit pays forward most directly into NEET-track biology, since strong conceptual grounding in Class 6–8 science compounds for years.
High school Science Bee divisions run separately from the middle/elementary divisions above. They are not simply "harder versions" of the same competition — the entire competitive environment shifts:
What a parent of a 9th grader (or older) should expect: treat this as a serious extracurricular decision, not a light trial. It is still worthwhile for a student who genuinely loves broad science and enjoys the buzzer format, but it competes for time against subjects that matter more directly for board exams and NEET/JEE preparation in the Indian context. It is worth being explicit about how differently this plays out at the two ends of the ladder, because the marketing around "the Science Bee" tends to flatten the experience into one description.

Neither end is "better" — they are simply different commitments. A parent's job is to match the expectation to the grade, not to import a 9th grader's competitive intensity onto a 6th grader, or a 6th grader's low-stakes casualness onto a 9th grader.
Look at their current grade, and that decides it:
There is no test to place into a different division, and no benefit to trying to game the placement. The system is designed so your child always competes against genuine peers.
Whatever the grade, the entry point is the same: the free Online Regional Qualifying Exam (ORQE). It costs nothing, takes about 20 minutes, and is the only real way to see how your child's current knowledge maps against their division. A parent or teacher registers as the sponsor before the child can sit it.

USABO is open to students in grades 9-12. Middle schoolers should look at Science Olympiad Division B, which is built for grades 6-9.
Most students work through Campbell over 6-9 months. The Semifinal leans on data interpretation and experimental design, so drill those alongside content.
Registration goes through a school or an approved centre. If your school does not participate, a teacher can register as a new centre with CEE.
