Parents researching the Science Bee usually want one thing first: what does the actual test look like? This guide answers that in full — the free qualifying exam, the subject spread, why the live rounds feel nothing like a school exam, and exactly how a student moves from the first stage to the last.

Every student's Science Bee journey begins here, and it is worth understanding exactly what it involves before your child sits it.
Format:
What it feels like: the ORQE is a written, self-paced multiple-choice exam. It is not timed pressure in the way a live buzzer round is — a student reads a question, considers four options, and answers. This makes it a genuinely low-stakes way to introduce a child to competitive science, because the format is close to a normal school test they already know how to take.
What it measures: breadth. Because questions are drawn from all nine subject areas (below), a student who reads widely tends to do noticeably better than a student who has only mastered their school syllabus deeply in one subject.
Every stage of the Science Bee — ORQE, Regionals, and Nationals — draws questions from the same nine areas:
Two things are worth noting about this spread. First, it is deliberately broader than a typical school science curriculum — engineering, computer science, and the history of science rarely get dedicated attention in Class 6–10 textbooks, so these are genuinely new territory for most students. Second, biology is one of nine areas, not the whole exam — a child who is exceptionally strong in biology but weak elsewhere will do well but not dominate, because the questions are spread fairly evenly across all nine subjects rather than weighted toward any one of them.
This matters for how you prepare. A student cannot "biology their way" to a top Science Bee result the way they might in a biology-specific Olympiad. Breadth across all nine areas is the actual currency here.
Once a student clears the ORQE, they move to a Regional tournament, and this is where the format changes completely.
Regionals and Nationals are buzzer-based, not written. A question is read aloud in a "pyramidal" style — it opens with a harder, more obscure clue and becomes progressively easier as more of the question is read. Any student can buzz in at any point once they believe they know the answer; the first correct buzz scores the point, and a wrong buzz can cost the chance to answer at all.
This is worth dwelling on, because it is the single biggest adjustment students make between the ORQE and Regionals:
Regional structure: students typically face several preliminary buzzer rounds (roughly 30 questions per round) followed by a final round, held either online or in person depending on the division and region.
Students who advance through Regionals meet at the championship stage — the US National Championships, the Asian Championships (which Indian students feed into), or the equivalent international event depending on division.
Structure: Nationals typically run around four preliminary buzzer rounds, after which the top scorers proceed to playoff rounds to determine final standings. The format intensifies at every step — faster pacing, harder pyramidal clues, and a field made up entirely of students who have already outperformed their Regional peers.
This is the stage where the gap between a student who only studied content and a student who also practised the buzzer format tends to show up most clearly. Content knowledge gets a student to Nationals; buzzer composure and speed decide a lot of what happens once they are there.

Two things to note about this system. First, advancement is relative, not absolute — there is no fixed score a student must hit; they need to place in the top half of whoever else sat that stage. This means the exact cutoff shifts every cycle depending on the strength of the field, and we deliberately do not quote a specific qualifying score here — it is not fixed and stating one would be misleading. Second, the halving happens twice (ORQE → Regionals, then Regionals → Nationals), so reaching Nationals genuinely means placing in roughly the top quarter of the students who started at the ORQE stage in a given division.
