Remember these points for your Olympiad preparation
Once a parent decides the Science Bee is worth trying, the next question is almost always: do we need coaching for this? This guide answers that honestly, option by option, including saying plainly when the answer is no.
If you have not yet placed your child's division or read about the format itself, start with our divisions guide and our exam pattern guide. This post assumes you know roughly what the Science Bee involves and want to know how to prepare for it well.
Before comparing options, it is worth saying this plainly: for a Class 6–8 student taking the free ORQE for the first time, or aiming for a Regional Final, self-study is very often the right answer, not a compromise. The Science Bee tests broad general knowledge across nine subject areas at a grade-appropriate level — this is fundamentally different from a deep, syllabus-bound Olympiad where structured coaching genuinely accelerates preparation. Keep that in mind as you read the rest of this guide; nothing below should be read as "coaching is always better."
What it involves: wide reading (magazines, documentaries, quality science YouTube), working through the current-grade NCERT or school science syllabus properly, and practising with past questions.

What self-study is genuinely good for:
What it is not as good for: live buzzer practice under real time pressure with an opponent. Reading alone will not build the split-second judgment call buzzer rounds require — that needs a second ingredient (see school clubs and mock sessions below).
Our honest take: for the ORQE and a first Regional attempt, self-study with QuizVidya is enough for the large majority of students. Do not feel you are under-preparing your child by skipping paid coaching at this stage.
What it involves: if your child's school runs a science club, quiz team, or even an informal after-school group that does buzzer-style practice, this is one of the best-value preparation options available.
What it is genuinely good for:
What to watch for: not every school has this, and quality varies widely. If your child's school does not run something like this, replicate it at home cheaply — see the "buzzer practice" section below.
Our honest take: if a school club exists, use it before considering any paid option. It solves the one thing self-study cannot (live buzzer practice) at no cost.
What it involves: a paid class, typically weekly, where a cohort of students studies Science Bee content together and sometimes runs mock buzzer sessions.
What it is genuinely good for:
What to be cautious about: group coaching for the Science Bee is a newer, less standardised market than coaching for established exams like NEET or well-known Olympiads. Quality varies enormously, and at this age the marginal benefit over free self-study plus a school club is often smaller than the fee implies.
Our honest take: worth considering only if (a) your child is genuinely more motivated by group structure than solo study, and (b) the free and low-cost options above are not available or not working. Do not default to this as the "serious" option — for most Class 6–8 students it is not necessary.
What it involves: a paid tutor working with a single student, usually focused on either content depth or dedicated buzzer-timing practice.
What it is genuinely good for:

Our honest take: reserve one-to-one tutoring for later-stage preparation (post-Regional-qualification) or for a student who has a specific, identifiable content gap. It is the most expensive option and the least necessary for most children at this age.

For nearly all Class 6-8 families, the first tier is the right amount of investment, and there is no need to move beyond it unless your child qualifies for a Regional and wants to keep going.
It is worth restating this clearly, because it drives the whole preparation plan: content study builds what a child knows; buzzer practice builds how fast and calmly they can act on it. A child can be extremely knowledgeable and still perform poorly in live rounds if they have never practised buzzing under time pressure, and a moderately-prepared child with good buzzer composure can outperform a stronger student who hesitates.
The practical implication: split preparation time between the two deliberately. Reading, NCERT/school syllabus, and QuizVidya build content. Family quiz nights, school clubs, or timed mock sessions (read a question aloud, race to answer) build buzzer skill. Neither substitutes for the other.

USABO is open to students in grades 9-12. Middle schoolers should look at Science Olympiad Division B, which is built for grades 6-9.
Most students work through Campbell over 6-9 months. The Semifinal leans on data interpretation and experimental design, so drill those alongside content.
Registration goes through a school or an approved centre. If your school does not participate, a teacher can register as a new centre with CEE.
